The Problem with Surface-Level Motivation


Many of us build our careers on goals that sound like this:

  • “I need this promotion.”

  • “I want to make more money.”

  • “I should be at this level by now.”


There’s nothing wrong with these goals. But when they’re disconnected from a deeper sense of purpose, they can feel empty—even when you achieve them.


Here’s what often happens: We focus so much on what we want to accomplish that we lose sight of why it matters.


And that “why”—your mission—is what gives your career both meaning and staying power.

When your work is rooted in a deeper mission:

  • Obstacles feel like challenges to overcome, not reasons to quit

  • Setbacks become growth opportunities, not evidence of failure

  • Success feels fulfilling, not fleeting


How to Find Your Deeper “Why”


So how do you discover your authentic mission?


It starts with asking better questions


Instead of just asking: “What job do I want?”


Try asking these questions instead:

🧩 “What problems am I uniquely positioned to solve?” 

🌍 “Whose lives would I most like to impact through my work?” 

🔁 “What change would I love to see in my industry or community?” 

💡 “When have I felt most fulfilled professionally—and why?”


Real-Life Example


One of my clients—a senior leader navigating a company merger—was fixated on landing a high-profile role. She kept comparing herself to louder, more aggressive candidates, trying to "prove" she could compete.


But when she paused and reconnected with her deeper mission—preserving the unique strengths of both organizations and leading a thoughtful integration—everything shifted.

Her confidence grew.


Her clarity returned.


She stopped mimicking others and leaned into her authentic leadership style—ultimately securing the role on her terms.


The Mission Test


Not sure if you’ve found your authentic mission? Here’s a simple test:


A true mission energizes rather than depletes you.

It might not always be easy, but it feels meaningful. It sustains your motivation even when things get hard.


A true mission...

  • Aligns with your core values

  • Feels personally important, not just impressive to others

  • Connects you to something larger than yourself

  • Inspires commitment, not just compliance

When obstacles arise—and they will—your mission becomes your compass.


Three Practical Steps to Find Your Mission


You don’t need to figure it all out at once. Try these small but powerful exercises to start uncovering your deeper “why”:


1. Reflect on Impact

Write down three ways your current work makes a positive difference—no matter how small. Then ask yourself: How could I expand that impact?


2. Identify Core Values

What are your non-negotiable values—the principles you refuse to compromise on? Now reflect: How well does your current work align with these values?


3. Connect to Legacy

Fast forward to the end of your career. What contribution would make you feel like your professional life was time well spent?


These reflections often reveal surprising clarity—not about a specific job title, but about the kind of work that matters to you.


Conclusion: Lead with Purpose, Not Just Plans


Finding your mission isn’t about crafting a perfect elevator pitch. It’s about discovering a source of meaning that can fuel your growth, your decisions, and your resilience.

When you find your deeper “why,” the path ahead doesn’t always become easier—but it does become clearer. You gain the courage to move forward with intention, even when the road isn’t smooth.
